Linen is naturally tough, so a 30°C machine wash is absolutely fine. What it doesn’t love is being shaken to bits, so we recommend keeping the spin below 600 rpm to avoid “breaking” the fibres.

Same idea: split your colours to avoid nasty surprises, and keep fabrics separate when you can. Linen reacts particularly badly when it’s washed with synthetic fibres and it can start looking sorry for itself if you do it often.

If you can, get a wash bag. It limits friction between your shirt, the drum, and the rest of the load.

Linen is absorbent and breathable, so it dries in no time. So spare it the tumble dryer, which will only damage it and make it harder to iron.

Instead, let it air-dry out of direct sunlight, on a hanger, so it relaxes back into shape naturally. A wooden hanger, please. We might as well do things properly.

Here, there are two camps:

• those who like linen nice and smooth, to bring a bit of texture to a smart outfit, without going full suit drama
• and the die-hard fans of linen as it is, raw and rustic, with its creases and bumps, which is kind of the point

If you’re in the first camp, iron your shirt with an iron set to 150°C max. A bit of steam helps too, if you want an easier life.

Since 1 January 2024, the New French environmental legislation known as The AGEC Law stipulates transparency from our lot in the fashion industry so that you can make an informed purchase. As you can imagine, this is something that we fully support at Asphalte. So here's some additional information about our Grandad Collar:

• They’re 100% recyclable after being dismantled, which means that the day their services are no longer required every component can be fully recycled. If you stop wearing yours for whatever reason, you might want to consider making someone else happy by passing it on to a friend, family member or donating it to a charity. The best way of reducing an item of clothing’s impact is by keeping it in circulation, and only recycling it when there really is no life or use left in it.
• No microplastics are released during washing. Unlike many garments, our Grand Collars have been designed to not release any microplastics. Plastic microfibres are tiny particles of plastic that are released when worn or washed and have a negative impact on aquatic and land ecosystems.
• They do not contain any hazardous materials. They’re manufactured in compliance with strict standards aimed at eliminating the use of harmful substances and other chemical nasties.
• They do not contain any recycled materials. We try to incorporate recycled materials whenever we can, unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to do so with the Grandad Collar.
