Care Guide for the Chelsea Boots

Make sure you get off the right foot with a few care tips.

Day to day care

  • Like most garments, we recommend not wearing them day in day out or too many days in a row. Like most of us, your Chelsea Boots like a rest from time to time, so we suggest alternating with other shoes so that the leather can take a breath, wind back and deal with the humidity
  • Use shoe trees, preferably made of wool, when you’re not wearing them. They’ll help them recover from being worn and keep in shape.

Oh and if you’re reading this while unboxing them, apply an additional waterproof treatment before taking them out for the first time.

Cleaning your Boots

For the smooth leather:

  • Remove any surface dirt or dust with a soft-bristle brush. Use a smaller brush (a toothbrush is good) to brush away any dust collected on the welt’s waxed thread.
  • Wipe your boots softly with a damp (not soaked) flannel cloth.
  • Then apply a small amount of neutral-coloured cream polish with a soft cloth in small, circular movements. First, choose a good one (Saphir's Pâte de Luxe is the best of the best) or avoid those that contain silicone as these generally impart a shiny layer, a kind of unwanted glow, on your boots. Same here, go easy on the quantity and remember to use a cloth. Don't hesitate to consult a specialist for the color and do a test on a small area first.
  • Brush with a polishing brush.
  • Buff the leather with a cotton chamois cloth to enhance the look and remove any excess shine.
  • Clean the laces separately
  • Be careful: don't use black polish – this will change the finish.

For the waxed and suede leather Boots

  • First, waterproof the pair before the first wear. Repeat the operation regularly (at least every month or every 10 wears). Remember to remove the laces before waterproofing.
  • Avoid wearing the boots in rainy weather.
  • Use a specific scuff eraser to remove marks or dirt.

Trust the pros

If you don't have a regular cobbler, we obviously recommend finding one. They're the ones who can:

  • Do all this work for you if you have better things to do than polish your shoes.
  • Resole them when they've accumulated enough mileage.
