What’s the lowdown on Fil d'Écosse?
That's what we're here to explain
Despite its name, Fil d'Écosse has absolutely nothing to do with the land of Irn Bru. To add to the confusion, the very same yarn is also sometimes known as Lisle Cotton - the old English for Lille, France. Anyway, one thing everyone’s agreed on is that it’s the most luxurious material out there when it comes to socks.
- Extra-long cotton fibres. The foundation that sets Fil d'Écosse apart. It uses exceptional fibres over 3.5 cm long that stand up to abrasion and guarantee durability.
- 64% mercerised cotton. You take those beautiful fibres and you make them better by bathing them in a solution that enhances their strength, fineness, softness and shine. It’s a C19th technique that’s still used today.
- 36% synthetic materials for toughness. Alongside the mercerised organic cotton, we added 34% polyamide for durability, 1% elastane for stretch and 1% lycra so the material doesn’t sag.

Will they stick around for the long haul?
That's our promise
Your big toe won’t be sticking out anytime soon.
- A dense rib. For optimal hold, we went for a substantial knit with plenty of tension. Zero sagging.
- A 1x1 rib band at the top. This is why they sit reliably on the calf without wandering into compression-stocking territory. You won't be yanking them back up every 100m.
- Reinforced in all the key areas. The heel and toe are strengthened with synthetic materials for XXL durability. No holes and no bobbling.

Where are they made?
By specialist makers in Portugal
Like a lot of clothes and accessories, most socks come from the other side of the world. We went for something much closer to home.
- Portugal is where the magic happens. We tracked down the ideal partner to make our Fil d'Écosse Socks, and they’re called Maison Fiuza & Irmao.
- Over 40 years of sock expertise. Fiuza & Irmao make socks and only socks. Since 1983, they've been knitting, linking and making socks while staying right at the cutting edge of technical innovation. At this level, it's less a speciality and more an obsession.
- The pinnacle of textile engineering. Fiuza & Irmao run one of the newest and most advanced fleets of machines out there. Tip-top quality guaranteed.
