Heritage is great… but it’s got to fit right

The Aran Jumper is a charity shop classic, but if you’re lucky enough to stumble across a vintage gem, two problems remain. The, erm, “generous” cut and the very, very nostalgic aroma. We’re talking long, wide, and a bit whiffy. Ours is—thankfully—another story:

  • A tidy, straight fit. Not too baggy, not too tight - bang on for a mid-layer that’s going to get you through the cooler months. This means there’s plenty of room for a shirt or whatever underneath, while still fitting nicely under your overcoat. It sits plumb on the hips and won’t be venturing any further over time.
  • Built to last, right down to the little details. Back in the day, the hardworking women who made these only had the local sheep’s wool to work with. Brilliant for knitting a toasty-warm jumper, but not the best when it comes to making hems and cuffs that behave. So, we’ve added a touch of elastane to the ribbed edges at the cuffs and hem. That means your Aran Jumper will hold its shape over time - no gaping cuffs or stretched hems.
  • Thanks, Inarbel. Our trusted partners in Portugal will be making your Aran jumper. We’ve worked with them on most of our knits, and they’ve never let us down. The range of knitting machines is the stuff of legend—and with all those clever techniques up their sleeves, each jumper is top-notch and will wear like a dream for years to come.

Nope

Back in the day, jumpers like these must’ve itched like mad. But for our Aran Jumper, we went for one of the world’s finest wools: Merino.

  • All the virtues you already know. Soft, insulating, regulates your temperature, anti-static, hypoallergenic, odourless—even self-cleaning—merino wool is the world’s most high-performing natural fibre.
  • 850 grams of pure cosiness. The Aran weighs in at just under a kilo to keep you toasty all winter. When it comes to warmth, we don’t mess about.
  • 0 itchiness. We’ve gone for a fibre that’s a scant 19.5 microns thick—about four times finer than your average human hair. Basically, you ain’t going to be scratching anytime soon. That said, it’s not an organic cotton t-shirt - let’s not get carried away.
  • Low maintenance. This one’s not going to be taking much time out of your busy schedule when it comes to maintenance. One wash a year before it goes into summer hibernation will do nicely. And if you’re a stickler for cleanliness, we’ve put together a with all the hot tips.

Oh yes

Aran Jumpers are all about mixing up different knitting patterns. In homage to the islands that gave the jumper its name, every stitch tells a story—symbolic designs that could single out families (plus, you get all that glorious texture woven right in). We picked out three for the Asphalte version.

  • The cable knit. Probably the most recognisable of all knitting patterns, it’s an Aran jumper favourite. Woven to look like fishermen’s rope, it’s meant to bring good luck to the wearer. And fishing the North Atlantic in the 19th century, you really needed it!
  • The moss stitch. Evoking the foam that hits the shores of the Aran Islands, it symbolises fertility.
  • The zigzag stitch. A nod to the winding islands themselves ensures safe passage through life.

How does preordering work?

Basically, it means you buy the garment before it’s produced. By pre‑ordering, you’re the one launching the production.

With this system, we only produce what’s sold, so we avoid overproduction and can offer you an excellent quality‑price ratio.
