No two pairs of pins are exactly the same. Even if we go to extreme lengths to design clothes that work for as many people as possible, there’s a fair chance you’ll need to tweak them to fit perfectly. This is especially true for suit trousers.

So a quick trip to your local alteration specialist will be needed, at the very least for the hem. Nothing dramatic, it’s standard stuff that any decent tailor can do with their eyes closed.

• The hem: the trousers come with an intentionally long leg and unhemmed. It’s normal, that way you’re free to choose the style you like. Italian turn-ups, a clean, crisp hem, cropped at the ankle? Up to you. Budget around €15 for this.
• The waistband: if the trousers feel a bit tight or a bit loose, you can have them taken in or let out a half size. Budget around €20.

How long your trousers last depends a lot on how you treat them. A few things worth getting in the habit of:

• Always hang your trousers up after wearing them. Ideally, on a proper trouser hanger, either folded or clipped. It stops them getting creased and damaged.
• We don’t recommend ironing them, the fabric could go shiny. Get them pressed by a pro.
• If you mark them, act fast. A bit of lukewarm water with gentle soap should be enough most of the time, as long as it’s done in time

You probably know this already: suit trousers don’t go in the washing machine. When they need freshening up, head to your local dry cleaners:

• Specify dry cleaning. It’s the safest way to avoid any nasty surprises. Budget around €15.
• Tip: if you also own the matching Fresco Suit Jacket, always take both items in together. It stops the colours ageing slightly differently over time.
• Last point: when picking them up, give them a quick once-over before leaving the dry cleaners. If you spot something wrong, they’ll sort it out. Once you get them home, that might not be so straightforward.
