Care guide for the Best Brogues

Here are a few tips on how to keep your Best Brogues looking — well — their best…

Give the leather a breather

Leather is a “living” material, so just like your feet, your shoes will also need to take a breather from time to time.

  • Avoid wearing your Brogues for days on end. Like all of us, they’ll be grateful for some time off, and it’ll give the leather time to relax.
  • Waterproof them before the first wear and a few times a year after that. The Goodyear Stormwelt construction may be watertight, but a few sprays with a good quality waterproofing product will protect your Brogues from the rain as well as from unexpected beer spillages.
  • Invest in a pair of wooden shoe trees to keep them in shape and to let out any excess moisture.

Start with a cloth.

You can give them a little shine with some cleansing milk, or a slightly damp glove or a cloth. That will allow you to dust them off and remove the daily free-riding dirt.

Brush them regularly

The trademark of Brogues is the decorative perforations found on the leather. It looks pretty, sure, but it also collects a lot of dust, grit and the likes. We recommend brushing them to remove the unwelcome dirt from these little holes once or twice a month depending on the wear. If you don't have a fancy shoe-specific tool, an old toothbrush will do the trick just fine.

After cleaning, you can apply a dab of shoe grease, which, when rubbed in with a clean piece of cloth, will moisturise and nourish the leather to restore its original shine. If you don't have this on hand, a dab of face/body moisturiser will work just as well (as long as it's not acidic).

And finish off with the shoe polish.

Friendly tip: don't wax them using silicone! You risk ending up with a transparent film all over your Brogues and to say the least, it won’t look pretty. Use the wax sparingly and apply gently with a cloth. Leave it on for fifteen minutes or so, then remove any excess with a horsehair brush.
