Here’s what’s wrong with your knitted jackets in the past

1

They bobble at lightning speed

2

They lose their shape

3

The cut is never quite right

Does exactly what it says on the tin

A 2.0 work jacket

It doesn’t take long to work out that our new Knitted Jacket owes a thing or two to the legend of French menswear: the work jacket. We've borrowed more than a few details from this classic item steeped in history, while bringing it up to standard for modern use. In short, we tilt its handsome workwear looks a little more towards elegance and comfort, striking just the right note between modernity and tradition.

The cut of the cut

In terms of fit, we haven't strayed far from the style that made the work jacket famous. It's fairly straight, not too long - the most versatile proportions. The sides are only slightly fitted, and the jacket falls neatly over the hips. Over a T-shirt, a Shirt or a lightweight Jumper, it'll be completely at home.

100% virgin Corriedale wool

Like most wools, this one is named after the sheep that grow it, in this case, the charming Corriedale. For the science bit, this breed was established at the end of the 19th century from a cross between the Merino ewe and the Lincoln ram. As you may know, the fibre of the former is prized for its fineness, softness and thermal properties; while the latter is renowned for its length, strength and lustre. The result is a wool that’s long, fairly thick and naturally silky, as well as being exceptionally thermoregulating.

A stable stitch

One of the key differences between a knitted and a woven fabric is stability. By nature, knits are more elastic, which is great for comfort but can mean they lose their shape. To make sure that your Knitted Jacket never suffers this fate, we’ve chosen an exceptionally compact knit: the full needle. This confusingly named knitting technique is like a 1x1 rib but with twice the number of stitches. The result is a fabric that’s twice as compact, noticeably heavier, and much more stable. Combined with combed Corriedale wool, this method keeps its shape and bobbles at bay.

A disciplined unit

True to the traditional French work jacket, we've opted for a generous collar cut somewhat like a shirt that bridges both French and Italian traditions. It’s made from a double-sided jacquard, another knitting technique that favours stability, and when worn buttoned up sits at almost 120°, an impressively bold angle. However you like to wear your jacket, you can rest assured that your collar’s going to behave.

Un, dos, tres

badadadadidim Maria. Come on, don't pretend you know the lyrics. And anyway, it’s beside the point. When we said un, dos, tres, we’re cleverly alluding to the number of pockets on the Knitted Jacket. There are three of them, and they’re all patch pockets. You can see them right there, and if your eyesight is sharp, you can even spot the bar tacks on the upper corners. A robust finish, and very much in the spirit of classic work jackets.

The War of the Buttons

The Knitted Jacket wins hands down. To prove it, it proudly displays 4 bio-based resin buttons, horn imitation at its best. These are hand-raised by our partner artisans and slide smoothly into the vertical buttonholes provided. Easy to button, easy to unbutton, without any gaps or bulging plackets. Spot on.

A word on maintenance

Another advantage of Corriedale wool is that its fibres are structured in such a way that they prevent bacteria from spreading on the surface of the knit. It’s considered by some to be self-cleaning, as it only needs to be aired for a few hours between wears to be 'cleaned'. So, a good clean once or twice a season will be more than enough. To do this, soak your garment in a basin of cold water with a small amount of organic liquid detergent, then rinse it in clean water before gently pressing it out. Don’t wring it out so as not to damage the fibres. Simply fold the jacket and press downwards to remove excess water. After this, you can leave it to dry flat on a towel away from direct sunlight.

Essential Knit Jacket

Thirty years ago, the suit jacket was THE essential item in our wardrobes. Today, it’s this one. The Knitted Jacket packs 950 grams of pure Corriedale wool to deliver a piece of history, revisited and modernised with a touch of elegance. A standout item that’ll stick by your side for years - if not decades - to come.
