The Path to Glory
With 2,514 replies to the co-creation questionnaire, the message was loud and clear: most chinos out there are poorly cut, flimsy, and just don’t last the course. Challenge accepted. To craft the trousers you’d given up finding, we dove deep into the archives and stumbled upon a gem from the 1940s: the M45. Designed for US Army soldiers, they’re a masterclass in comfort, durability, and practicality. We took them as a blueprint and applied the full Asphalte treatment, and the results and perfectly tuned for today’s needs. Introducing the Heritage Chinos.
A Fabric for All Seasons
Getting the Heritage Chinos up to scratch called for 100% organic cotton twill, woven in Italy by a specialist mill called Maison Olimpias. Now, we debated between single- and double-twisted yarns (one thread vs. two twisted together). In the end, the single twist won for its dry, matte finish. At 260g/m², it’s thick enough to keep you cosy in winter but breathable enough for the summer. A year-round workhorse that’s as comfortable as it is versatile.
Put through its paces
The fabric didn’t just look the part, it scored great in all our usual lab drills. Our pals at Olimpias put it through the wringer: wash stability, and resistance to tearing, on both horizontal and vertical tension. It breezed through every challenge, meaning these chinos are built to last whatever you throw at them.
A Cut Above
The generous, straight cut defines these trousers. They’re roomy around the thighs, relaxed through the lower leg, and have a 20cm cuff opening (where your feet come out). They’re not baggy like their ancestors, but definitely not slim either. If you’re into comfort and a loose-but-sharp silhouette, these ones are for you.
The Killer Detail
Ever heard of a continuous waistband? Perhaps not, but it’s a game-changer. Unlike most waistbands, which are applied as a separate piece, these are made directly from the waist, an extension of the legs if you will. The result? Unbeatable comfort and a natural fit that follows your movements better. Vintage genius brought back to life.
The good ol’ 5 Pockets
Staying true to the heritage, the Chinos come with 5 spacious pockets. Two Italian-style ones up front, a ticket pocket on the side and two flap ones at the back. Call it a gusset pocket, a lighter pocket, or whatever suits your fancy—it’s all about practicality with a dollop of old-world charm.
The Right Finishing Touches
Made by our trusted partners at Expotime in Portugal, the Heritage Chinos are packed with thoughtful details. Solid stitching, reinforced stress points, 100% cotton pocket linings, a button fly, and a continuous waistband. These pros have worked their magic again, just like they did on the Light and Heavy Chinos. Plus, they’re made only a stone’s throw away—how’s that for keeping it local?
Easy-Peasy Maintenance
After every 15–20 wears, your Chinos deserve a well earned break. A quick 30°C wash on a gentle spin (600/800 rpm) will do the trick. Turn them inside out to air dry—no tumble dryers, please! And if you fancy ironing, keep it under 150°C. Pretty straight forward.
Built to Last Generations
Inspired by an 80-year-old icon, the Heritage Chinos are a classic reborn. It’s everything we love at Asphalte: timeless designs, modernised with your input, and built to tackle today while keeping an eye on tomorrow. We’re really happy to have co-created these with you, we hope you are too.
