Hard-wearing boots, built to withstand the elements

4,700 of you told us what we needed to sidestep to make a good pair of boots:

The leather doesn’t hold up

The outsole comes off

The laces aren’t strong enough

They’re not as comfortable as you’d hoped.

Give ‘em the boot

Luscious leather

Our leather Derby Boots aren’t made from any old cowhide. Nope, we opted for some seriously hard-wearing full-grain Spanish leather, aniline-dyed for a rich patina. For those wondering, full-grain leather comes from the strongest, most hard-wearing part of the hide. Put simply, it’s tough stuff.

Swanky suede

Those tasty suede versions are made from Italian calf-suede. This stuff has a really nice, buttery texture that mere words can barely do justice. Like our leather, this suede is made to last, and when we seriously put it to the test in an independent SMT lab-test, the boots got full marks, which is to say, they didn’t show any marks.

All-weather wonders

Boots that you can only wear when the sun is blazing aren’t much good, so we treated our Suede Derbys with a natural water-resistant finish. We’d still recommend waterproofing the suede ones from time to time, but you won’t need to be checking the forecast every time you want to wear ‘em. Delete that weather app and get out there.

Serious boots need strong, shock-absorbing sole. That’s why we chose a 100% rubber Commando sole from Itshide. Not only are these super-grippy, and reassuringly hard-wearing, but if they do eventually wear down, your local cobbler will be able to replace them quick-sharp.

The Goodyear Storm Welt... yep, it sounds impressive, and we’re pleased to report it is pretty impressive. It’s a tried and tested shoe-making method that involves attaching the uppers to the sole using a water-resistant leather rim. Not only does it keep the rain out, but it makes things seriously sturdy. This is skilled craftsmanship here.

As the wise sage Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast.” With that in mind, we used ‘speed hooks’ on our boots so you can lace them up in record time. Less time faffing around, more time crashing parades and posing as the Sausage King of Chicago? Yes please.

To make sure your laces don’t give up the ghost, we gave them a waxed finish, and used low-friction metal eyelets. This gives them less chance to wear through, meaning you won’t be left clutching half a shoe-lace in despair, wondering where it all went wrong.

Big ol’ leather boots aren’t often the most comfortable things to stride around in, but ours buck the trend. They’ve got a hidden layer of sponge in the insole to keep things cosy and put a spring in your step. Sponge ain't just for cakes.

Our boots are constructed in Portugal by our regular shoe-smiths Penha. We work with this bunch a lot, and it’s no overstatement to say that they’re true masters of their craft. They’ve been making Goodyear welted footwear since the 60s, and are still at the top of the class.
