The full roundup

Sumptuous suede

Our suede came from the world-renowned Mastratto tannery in Italy. Soft… supple… this stuff is just how suede should be. It’s no slim suedey either, and has a reassuringly hearty weight to it and a really nice drape. Perfect.

Everything as it seams

Thick, hefty suede can sometimes lead to bunching at the stitching. To combat this, ours is thinned slightly at the seams for a neater look and a smoother shape. Think of it as a refined Trucker, sort of like if Alfa Romeo made articulated wagons.

The long and short of it

Vintage Truckers are often a little on the short side, so we added a little extra length for a more modern fit. It’s still no trench coat, by any means, but you won’t wind up looking like you’ve borrowed your nephew’s jacket when you wear this down the pub.

The inside line

To make things even more comfortable, the Suede Trucker is lined with organic cotton—tartan on the torso, and pinstripes on the sleeves. This means you can wear it over a t-shirt without the slightly strange ‘suede on skin’ sensation. And if you turn it inside out, you’ve got yourself a handy disguise when you’re trying to avoid your neighbours at the supermarket. Always useful...

Handy haulage

As for pockets, our Suede Trucker has plenty. There’s two flap pockets on the chest, two welted hand pockets on the front, and two covert inside pockets too. Trucker by name, Trucker by nature.

Make mine a double

Stitching can often be the weak link in a jacket, so we double-stitched our seams to add another line of resistance. It also adds a tasteful bit of work-wear flavour, which is never a bad thing

Darts aren't just for throwing

Darts are a classic tailoring detail that add shape by tucking fabric under a row of stitching. Trucker Jackets are famous for ‘em, so we were sure to keep them firmly in place—running from the chest pockets down to the hem.

It's a cinch

The eagle-eyed might have spotted those button-adjusters on the hem. These nifty things are another trademark Trucker feature, and allow you to choose between a slimmer tapered shape, or something a bit more relaxed.

Not just for truckers

Suede is the easier alternative to leather, and because of that classic shape, the Suede Jacket works everywhere a denim jacket would—the perfect partner to jeans or chinos.

The team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
