Don't let it rain on your parade

The Smart Raincoat, eh? You might be thinking to yourself, “Yeah, it does look pretty smart.” But it doesn’t just look smart. It is smart. You see, we’ve used a rather clever fabric known as Ventile, which was originally invented to keep RAF pilots dry should they have to ditch their planes into the sea. When there’s moisture in the air, the yarn swells (don’t worry, it’s not like pulling the cord on a life vest) making the fabric denser, and therefore waterproof. Top marks to whoever came up with that one.

Hoping for a dry spell

1

A fabric that doesn’t actually keep you dry

Not durable enough to last

Oversized and shapeless

Shoddy details

Whatever the weather!

About that Ventile…

Not to go on about it, but that Ventile cotton is a bit special. It’s 100% cotton, no funny additives or anything like that, and yet it has these special powers. No wonder fighter pilots put their faith in it.

The organic option

Not only is the Ventile pure cotton, but it’s organic, too. You’ve heard of Egyptian cotton for a reason – and our stuff’s been woven, dyed and finished by Stotz in Switzerland.

Keep it neat

It seems obvious to say it, but raincoats are designed to go over what you’re already wearing. This doesn’t mean, however, that they should be all baggy and shapeless. As you’ve come to expect from us, it has a neat tailored fit, while still accommodating layers underneath.

The ‘Cantona collar’

When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. That may well be true, but what’s the collar like? Well, we’ve gone for a full-sized 9cm collar, which looks nice sitting flat, but even better popped up against the elements. Proper raincoat, proper collar.

It’s all about airflow

Staying dry often comes at the cost of staying cool. It’s one thing not letting moisture in, but a good raincoat also lets heat out. The 240g/m2 Ventile cotton is light, making it perfect for spring and summer. We’ve also added two ventilation grommets underneath the arms.

No more phone fiascos

Pocket technology finally catches up with phone technology. We all know the frustration of having pockets too small for your phone, so we offer a simple solution: bigger pockets. The inside pockets on the Smart Raincoat are ample for any brand of smartphone.

Horn again

Most weeks we’re banging on about horn buttons, and this week is no exception. If you’re talking jacket buttons, there really is no better material than genuine, ethically sourced horn. It looks great and it lasts. And to ensure no buttons ping off, we’ve secured them with Ascolite thread.

We pick good pockets

The hip pockets on the Smart Raincoat are neat welt pockets, with flaps for keeping the rain out. Of course, you can tuck those flaps in, if you prefer.

Does it rain much in Portugal?

We’re not too sure. It’s always been pretty sunny when we’ve been there to spend time with our suppliers or down on the beach. But even if they don’t get a lot of rain, they seem to know a thing or two about making tip-top rainwear. The Smart Raincoat was made by our pals over at Carjobel, outside of Porto.

The one upside to living in a rainy country – good coats.

Traceability

What goes into making your Smart Raincoat. The materials have travelled a total of 7,245 km (4,501 miles) from field to doormat.

The Team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
