A military masterpiece

Surplus to requirement

Old army surplus M-65s look ace… until you try them on. Short arms… boxy torsos… were the men of the 1960s shaped like Oxo Cubes? We updated the shape to drag the design into the 20th century. It’s still undoubtedly an M-65, but it won’t make you look like you’re heading to the battle reenactment.

Plenty tough

It’s only right that a time-honoured hard-wearing jacket like this is made from seriously tough fabric. 400g/m2 organic moleskin cotton should do it. This stuff is reassuringly hefty, and because we washed it, it’s got a really nice worn-in patina. And before anyone asks—no moles were harmed in the making of this jacket.

Comfort is king

To make sure things were nice and cosy, we lined our jacket with soft organic 100g/m2 cotton poplin. The M-65 might be the garment of choice for hard-boiled anti-heroes like Rambo or Travis Bickle, but we reckon even they liked to put their feet up with a big mug of hot chocolate and embrace comfort every now and again.

No hard shoulder

You don’t need to be a physiotherapist to know that your shoulders take a lot of strain. The same goes for jackets—it’s where a lot of movement takes place, so if they’re not up to the task, they can often wear through. We reinforced ours so they’ll always take the strain.

Zip zip hoorah

You’re deep in the wilderness, miles from civilisation, casually whittling a log into the shape of Matthew Perry’s head, when your zip breaks. Not ideal. With that in mind, we used a big ol’ YKK zip down the front, as well as some hefty press-studs. Rest easy Ray Mears.

The fab four

Those four sizable front pockets are one of the M-65s defining features. They were originally designed for carrying maps, compasses and other such important military gear, but these days they’re just as useful for storing phones, train tickets and lightly salted snacks. We added an inside pocket too—what you keep in there is up to you.

Ready for action

Hard-wearing jackets can sometimes be a little unwieldy, so our M-65 features what’s known in the outerwear world as an ‘action back’. That’s the gusseted bit near the shoulders that makes waving your arms about a breeze. Oh yeah, and we added some vents in there too for a bit of air-conditioning.

65 ways to wear

One of the reasons the M-65 has endured for so long is that it goes with everything—sort of like a well-cooked plate of chips. Yep, you can go down the classic ‘1970s wayward American drifter’ route with selvedge jeans and some work-boots, but it’ll work well ‘Italian-style’ over a suit too.

All good in the hood

One minute there’s not a cloud in the sky, the next it’s raining cats, dogs and various other large mammals. That’s where our stowaway hood comes in. It stays out the way when you don’t need it, and then when you do, it can be deployed within seconds thanks to that handy zip.

L'équipe

There were four of us when we launched Asphalte in 2016. We had a few years' experience in fashion and we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using amazing materials and made in good conditions.

The guys we had in mind were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to bankrupt themselves for a pair of jeans. We asked them questions to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision.

Since then, you have been the focus of our thoughts. Asking for your opinion about a product is the starting point for our design process, and that won't change.

We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics but with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, things that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.

Over three years, we've gradually put together the dream team to take on the world. Today, there are 45 of us, and our only aim is to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
