We got a great big convoy…

A workwear classic with a lot of mileage

Imagine we’re on a road trip together. It’s us in the driver’s seat, and you’re deciding where we go next. A bit like Thelma and Louise, or Clint Eastwood and that orangutan (no offence). You see a sign that says, ‘Preorder Town – 5 miles.’ We take the next turn off and arrive at a roadside diner. What’s on the menu? Why, it’s a Corduroy Trucker Jacket, of course!

These things happen organically

We do a fair bit of legwork when we’re looking for new suppliers. It’s important to make sure everything is up to scratch, and sometimes you happen upon just the right people. We sourced the organic cotton for the Cord Trucker from a trusted farming cooperative in India.

For you, my friends, anything

This is what we like to think the good people at TBM in Northern Italy said when we asked them for a special sort of corduroy. We couldn’t find exactly what we are after, so we sent them our premium organic cotton and asked them to whip up a heavy cord with a vintage feel. They didn’t disappoint.

Is it getting heavy?

So we’ve established the corduroy is heavy, but exactly how heavy? Well, it’s 420g/m2, if you’re a numbers man. That means it’s got a satisfying weight that drapes nicely but isn’t too thick.

When’s tee time?

Cord can be a bit stiff when it’s new, and we didn’t want that. Luckily, the mad scientists over at TBM had the perfect solution: the ‘golf wash.’ Stick a load of golf balls in the washing machine with the fabric, and they tenderise it like a good cut of meat. No really. Don’t try this at home.

Packed with pockets

Don’t ever say we’re stingy with the pockets. We’ve packed a whopping six into the Cord Trucker, and it’s a pretty compact bit of clobber to start with. Four outside, two inside, so you’ve got plenty of room for all your bits and pieces.

The lengths we’ll go to

Trucker jackets are supposed to be short. They’re designed for people who spend the majority of their time sitting down, so a short jacket is essential. But, of course, there’s short and there’s short. We wanted to make sure ours didn’t look daft, so we’ve cut the length just so

This ain’t no truckstop

While traditionally short, trucker jackets can be a bit baggy. That’s fine if you’re gassing up at a truck stop outside of Oklahoma, but maybe not if you’re popping to the local tapas bar for an early dinner. As usual, you wanted a neat, tailored fit, and that’s exactly what we’ve given you.

Steel yourself

Tough jackets need tough buttons, and what’s tougher than steel? Titanium, maybe? That might have pushed the price up a bit. We’ve gone for steel buttons which are extremely hard-wearing, and also look a treat thanks to a vintage-style sandy finish.

The quality you’ve come to expect

Our pals over in Portugal never let us down. They really know their way around a clothes factory, whether they’re making shirts, trousers, accessories, or jackets. This time, it’s the latter, and the team at Cortextil are known to do a stellar job.

The Team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
