Size guide

Another kind of pants sure, you told us, but only if we avoid this:

A cut that’s uncomfortable and unflattering

Wool that’s itchy against the skin

Flimsy quality that doesn’t go the distance

An old-fashioned look

Right then, let’s get started

Wonder wool from down under

We used pure new wool for these, which we sourced from farming cooperatives in Australia. You’re not going to end up with a great pair of wool trousers if you don’t start off with some top-notch virgin wool. So as always we went all the way to find the right quality and of course mulesing-free.

The Italian way

Once we’d sourced the raw wool, we sent it over to our pals at Marzotto through their facilities in Czech Republic, set up ten years ago. They're a one-stop shop for wool processing, they spin, dye, weave and finish the wool, so when they send it back to us it's become a very tasty fabric that was just begging to be turned into trousers.

Military precision

In fact, Marzotto have a pretty impressive reputation when it comes to conjuring up cracking cloth. They also supply a number of the Italian state services such as the army and the police, and naturally, that lot need durable products they can rely on.

Take a warp on the wild side

Marzotto also very kindly twisted the warp thread for us, which in layman’s terms means these aren’t itchy. It can be an issue with wool trousers, so we weren’t going to take any chances.

We called in the experts

That’s enough about the making of the fabric, let’s talk about the making of the trousers themselves. That responsibility fell to Twintex in Portugal, who not only make a mean pair of strides but also do so in an ethical, sustainable way. Nice one, Twintex.

Perfect pockets

For the side pockets we’ve kept things classic, and for the back pockets, we’ve added stylish flaps that fasten with top-quality horn buttons. No more losing your train tickets.

Dial M for ‘Modern’

You were very clear that you didn’t want pleated trousers that felt old fashioned. That’s the trouble with pleats, get them wrong and they can make you look like you’re on your way to a Great Gatsby themed party. Not a good look. So these have a sharp, contemporary feel.

Buttons you can bet on

Regular readers will know how much we love horn buttons. They look great, and they’re incredibly durable, how can you go wrong? We’ve used horn buttons for the interior of the Wool Pleated Pants, but for the outside, we sourced vintage brass buttons for that extra dash of character.

We like to give you options

The Wool Pleated Pants come with a simple turn-up, so they’re ready to go, right out the door. However, should you need to lengthen them (the inside leg measures 34”) we’ve left enough extra fabric inside so they can be altered.

Pleated and undefeated

The Team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
