The Full Story

A contemporary classic

Whilst we took inspiration from vintage Varsity Jackets for the details, one thing we were happy to leave in the 1950s was that weird short and boxy shape. Homosapiens have evolved a bit in the last 70 years, so it was only right that we sharpened our Varsity up a fair bit for the contemporary humanoid.

Plenty of fish(nets) in the sea

We made our Varsity Jacket from a pretty fancy nylon fabric known as ECONYL®. It’s light, it’s durable, and it goes the distance without morphing into a bobbly mess. Oh yeah, and it’s made from none other than upcycled nylon waste—a large percentage of which comes from old fishing nets. Clever stuff eh?

Snap decision

You told us you were tired of weak buttons that didn’t cut the proverbial mustard, so we hunted down some heavy-duty press-studs that are made to last. These things are reassuringly chunky, they look really slick and, perhaps most importantly, they make a really satisfying snap when you click them together.

Bags of potential

Pocket bags aren’t the sort of thing most people spend their time thinking about, but they matter. They’re the place you put your prized possessions, so we made ours from thick 180g/m2 fabric to keep holes out the equation. After all, unless you particularly enjoy talking to your local emergency locksmith, losing your house keys isn’t much fun.

Get collared

That sweeping ‘bomber collar’ is one of the tried and tested Varsity Jacket features you were keen to keep. A bit more casual than a regular flat collar, it protects the neck whilst still giving you room to move—after all, sportswear shouldn’t be stiff or stuffy.

A good old fashioned ribbing

Like sweatshirts, Varsity Jackets use elasticated ribbing on the cuffs and the hem to keep them firmly in place—and to keep the draft out. We made ours from a durable mix of cotton and polyamide that’ll keep its stretch for years to come.

Insider knowledge

On the inside there’s some recycled-fleece padding for a bit of extra warmth for summer evenings, and the sleeves have been lined so they feel seriously slick. Looking the part is one thing, but comfort is pretty crucial too.

In the navy

Subtle and understated, or bold and brash? Both have their place, so we made two versions of our Varsity Jacket. They’re both navy blue, but one of them has striped ribbing and a big letter ‘A’ on the chest.

A very versatile Varsity

You know what they say… “You can’t spell Varsity without versatility”. Actually, do they say that? Well, they certainly should. Whether you’re strolling around campus in chinos and tennis shoes, or you’re bowling about the streets of Brooklyn in jeans and trainers like a young Spike Lee, the Varsity will always work.

A Class Act

What goes into making your Varsity Jacket ?

The materials have travelled a total of 6,838 km (4,249 miles) from field to doormat.

Recycling polyamide waste

This Jacket didn't require any new fabric to make sincethe fabric's made from recycled plastic material, mainly discarded fishing nets. It may be just a little drop in the sea, but it’s still that much less in the oceans.

The team

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.

Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.

We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.

Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
