V is for Victory.

A very virtuous pullover.

The V sinks too deep

They pill

The cut is too large

They lose their shape

Holy knitwear, Batman!

Thrown in the deep end

Remember what your mum said when she took you to the local swimming pool as a wee lad: ‘Don’t go too far into the deep end.’ Who knew that all these years later that advice would still ring true? We’ve made a V-neck with a neckline that isn’t too deep, but also doesn’t just keep you pinned in the shallow end like a novice. Just right.

The amazing disappearing jumper

You could have sworn you put your jumper in the machine along with your pants and socks. But where has it gone? Does a washing machine have an emergency exit we don’t know about? Oh no, there it is. You couldn’t see it cos it’s now so tiny. No shrinkage with ours.

Nice and easy

On that subject, this is an easy piece of knitwear to look after. You’re not buying a pet here, so it shouldn’t require a lot of supervision. When it needs freshening up, just bung it in the machine, but no warmer than 30, mind.

From a land down under

Australia, exporter of wine, bizarro movies, and some of the best telly soaps known to man. And you can add wool to that list. The yarn we’ve used is spun from a Merino wool, from mulesing-free sheep reared in Australia. They don’t go on about it, but the Aussies produce some of the best wool in the world.

V. precise

We’ve got to hand it to you, you lot know what you want. And fit is always high up on the list. If it don’t fit right, it don’t sit right with you. And it’s no surprise, because it’s pretty much the most important thing when it comes to clothes. So a neat, tailored fit, it is then.

Keep in shape

Naturally, if your new jumper fits nicely to start with, you want it to stay that way. In the world of politics integrity is a key quality, but is something of a rarity. So too in the world of knitwear. Our V-neck can be relied upon to steer the course, and make those tough decisions.

Stay off the pills

What slugs are to the keen amateur gardener, pilling is to the knitwear aficionado. An inevitable, seemingly unbeatable nuisance. Well, pilling is only inevitable if you don’t use tip top Australian Merino, spun in Italy. It scored a very respectable 4/5 in an independent lab pilling test, meaning bobbling is kept to an absolute minimum.

‘Milano’ – It’s Italian for ‘Rather Nice’

‘There’s more than one way to skin a cat’ doesn’t conjure particularly pleasant images, so how about this: ‘There’s more than one way to knit a jumper.’ In fact, there are many ways. We’ve chosen a Milano stitch, which is dense, textured, but breathable. We don’t speak Italian, but no doubt ‘Milano’ means ‘rather nice.’

Fa-fa-fa-fa (Fully) fashion(ed)

When the time comes to connect the sleeves to the body you’ve got a couple of options. There’s cut and sew, which is exactly as it sounds, or there’s fully fashioned where the sleeves are basically knitted on. We’ve chosen the latter because not only does it produce a better result, it also produces less waste.

A veritable feast of options :

The team

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.

Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.

We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.

Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
