Worth the weight
A perfect Henley is hard to beat. A less than perfect one is hard to get away with. Too many out there are lightweights and lightweight cotton means twisting and warping, while those that are too heavy leave you sweating buckets. We spent a lot of time finding the ideal weight, and it turns out it’s 220g/m2. This 100% organic cotton is a little weightier than the average which means it’ll drape nicely and stand up to those spin cycles but still keep you cool when summer rolls round.
No pyjama worries here
That ideal fabric is of course only a starting point. The next bridge to cross is the cut. On a well-cut shirt, the Henley’s trademark button placket is the pièce de résistance, as our French colleagues would say. On an ill-cut top, it sets those pyjama alarm bells ringing. We went for the same tidy, tailored cut that worked so well on our long-sleeved Henley. If it ain’t broke...
Stick, don’t twist
Thanks to the same the top-notch jersey-knit that goes into our seriously sturdy T-shirts, the Henley won’t twist, stretch, warp, waver, wobble... The dense knit has serious staying power. And, as ever, we don’t expect you to just take our word for that. We had the jersey lab-tested. The results? Minimal movement around the seams. This one will stick around for years to come.
Year-round credentials
This is a real heavyweight, but we put a lot into finding the right balance between durability and breathability. This carefully crafted cotton jersey has nigh-on magical thermoregulating powers. OK, maybe that’s a bit much, but the point is it’s solid enough to stand up to serious wear and won’t leave you melting once the weather improves. It’s an all-year-round classic.
Perfectly balanced
We don’t think of ourselves as lazy. Hopefully, you don’t either. We didn’t just cut the arms off our long-sleeved Henley and declare job done. Short sleeves called for sizing and fit adjustments, most notably on the button placket, which we made shorter to keep things balanced and looking just right. The outcome of our hours of placket analysis: three buttons, 20cm, the ideal collar.
A seriously sturdy neckline
While on the subject of collar line details, the neck opening of a Henley is its spiritual hub. Once that goes, the rest of the shirt crumbles around it. We triple secured the collar and went for a double secured placket with the same jersey construction. It’s an old-school approach to making a round neck with serious grit. We do our best to protect your necks.
Flawless sleeves
We took the sleeves on our Ultimate T-Shirt as inspiration here. Ultimate T-Shirt equals ultimate sleeves, tailored without being too snug. The shape allows maximum comfort of movement while keeping the shirt’s overall tidy feel. No flapping, no pinching, just sleeves as they should be.
Workwear details seen to
As ever, we didn’t skip over details on this one. We kept the half-moon insert at the back of the collar, a nice nod to the Henley’s medieval workwear heritage. On that note, we opted for Flatlock stitching on the seams for top performance. Should you end up working up a sweat, we’re sure you’ll appreciate the attention to detail.
A T-shirt, but with a bit more about it
So there you have it. It’s like our extremely popular long-sleeved Henley, but short-sleeved, of course with all the little details adjusted and seen to. Consider it a T-shirt with extra character, a staple that’s been popular since the Norman invasion of Britain. Serious staying power that.
