If you could only have one coat
Don’t underestimate the Overcoat.
A fabric that pills
Pockets that wear out
Say hello to your new best friend.
The shape of things to come
Fit is always important, but especially so when it comes to overcoats. A coat covers pretty much everything else you’re wearing, so it has to be the right shape. Roomy enough to chuck it on over a suit or some chunky knitwear, but still tailored around the waist.
A helping hand
If an overcoat is cut right, it can be one of the most flattering things you can own. Not only does ours give you a bit of shape around the waist, but it also has light padding in the shoulders. The overall impression is that of the much coveted ‘V’ shaped torso, even if yours is more of an ‘O’.
You could have the most flattering overcoat in the world, but if it doesn’t keep you warm you aren’t going to wear it, are you? That’s why we opted for this heavy duty 420 grams per square metre merino flannel from Leichtfried, a weaver from Austria with 130 years experience.
Banish the bobble
Your overcoat goes from smart to scruffy pretty quickly once the fabric starts to bobble, or ‘pill,’ to use the technical term. This flannel was made with precisely this in mind using a clever felting process that condenses the fabric. No wonder it passed a rigorous lab pilling test with flying colours. Now that’s smooth.
Just when you thought this fabric couldn’t get any better, here’s another newsflash for you: it’s been treated with a water-repellent Aquastop finish. That’s right, those canny Austrians thought of everything. This will keep you dry as well as warm. Not bad, eh?
The hardest button to button
If you’re buttoning and unbuttoning your coat all day, it’s bound to cause stress on the thread that keeps them secured. That’s why, in the lifetime of a coat, the buttons are very often the first casualty. But if you use a secured button system, attached with Ascolite thread (like we do), then your buttons aren’t going anywhere.
We picked the right pockets
Most of us take pockets for granted. They’re always there for us when it’s time to put our phones away, or if we’re feeling awkward and need somewhere to put our hands. What would we do without them? We chose a 180 grams per square metre cotton twill for our pocket bags, so your valuables stay secure.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the fine folk over at Carjobel make one mean bit of outerwear. In fact, there’s no one else in the world we’d rather work with to bring you a classic, no-nonsense overcoat.
Hooray for democracy
As an added bit of trivia for you, this overcoat is the first time we’ve developed a pattern entirely from scratch, guided by your feedback from the customer surveys. More than 3,000 of you weighed in on the collar, the pockets, the fit. This isn’t just an overcoat, it’s utopian democracy in action.
Who knew being so cosy could look so good?

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.
Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.
We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.
Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
