The last of the big spenders

When was the last time you bought a new wallet? Five years ago? Ten, maybe? A wallet is something you buy and then forget about, but you’ll notice if it falls apart. Or if you lose it. Poor old wallet – overlooked, underappreciated, working day-in, day-out without so much as a thanks. Unfortunately, things are about to get a lot worse for your wallet, because after reading this you might just be moving it on and getting a new one. One made in Portugal from a full-grain Italian leather.

With you through boom and bust.

It’s all about the Benjamins

All aboard the grain train

Once you’ve experienced full-grain, veg-tanned leather from Italy, nothing else will suffice. This is the highest quality part of the hide which has had very little done to it, simply because it doesn’t need it. It’s good enough to start with.

One of your five-a-day

For the dyeing process we’ve avoided nasty chemicals and gone instead for vegetable tanning. Vegetables – is there no end to their talents? Actually, to be precise, oak leaves and bark were used here. Not only does it produce a richer, more natural colour, but it has a far lower impact on the environment.

Like fine wine

A leather like this ages nicely, too. It won’t look creased, marked, or tired after a few outings. Rather, it will just get better as it gets older. Now if only you could say the same for yourself.

Slimmed Down, But Beefed Up

We got the width of this wallet down to just 10mm – your jean pockets will thank you. But that doesn’t mean we’ve had to compromise on space. It’s an incredibly practical design that holds everything you’ll need.

Lots of Slots

Slots! It’s got lots of ‘em. Well, it’s got four to be precise but who needs more than that? Do you really still need to be carrying around that fake ID?

Nothing Unnecessary

As we’ve said, this is a pared-down bit of design, no extra pockets or compartments that you never end up using. No unnecessary top-stitching or embellishment.

Send for Reinforcements

If you think about how many times a day your wallet goes in and out of your pocket, you’ll realise the need for sturdy construction. Ours is stitched together using a waxed cotton thread which won’t come apart, and it’s reinforced at all the key stress points.

Thy Twill Be Done

Yes, we really have thought of everything: the slots and pockets are lined in the same cotton twill we used for our 48h Bag. Your credit cards will thank you.

Portuguese Craftsmanship

The whole lot is put together by Belcinto in Portugal, a family-run affair committed to high quality and low impact.

The team

Four of us started Asphalte back in 2016. With a few years of experience in fashion under our belts, we wanted to make clothes, but not just any old clothes. Well-made clothes, designed to last, using great materials and made in good conditions. The guys we wanted to kit were our mates, who liked clothes but who weren't willing to go all out on a pair of jeans. We send them a survey to find out what they expected from a brand. Their answers were so enlightening that we opened the questionnaires up to everyone. Best decision we ever made.

Since then, you've been at the start of every clothes we make. We ask for your opinion on a product before we get busy with the design process, and that's the way forward for us.

We're not here to reinvent the wheel. We're here to make your wardrobe classics with the best materials and the best manufacturers. Above all, we're here to make things simple, stuff that you'll still be able to wear in ten years' time.

Over the last 4 years, we've gradually put together the dream team to make it happen on a larger scale. Today, there are 45 of us working to make your favourite clothes, in a quality that was once reserved for a handful of men.
