A heavyweight knit, made with cold weather in mind
Where had your knits gone wrong in the past.
They lose their shape.
They’re too big.
The fabric pills.
The wool is poor quality.
The Knit List
The Heavy Zip Knit is made from Australian Merino wool. Not only does this keep your torso nice and warm when it’s cold out, but because of Merino’s mystical powers of thermo-regulation, you won’t wind up sweating buckets if you have to make a dash for the bus.
AN ABSOLUTE PEARLER
Woollen wares can sometimes stretch over time, so to make sure ours held its shape, it was tightly woven into a heavyweight pearl rib knit. This is the same way that military jumpers used to be made—and there’s a reason plenty of those are still going strong today.
Heavy-gauge knitwear doesn’t have to feel like chainmail. Our wool has been carded—a process that involves untangling the fibres—to give it a soft texture. Whether you’re wearing it, or using it as a head-rest whilst trying to get 40 winks during a cross-country train trip, this thing is comfy.
THE TAILOR AND THE SAINT
Our Knit has our trademark tailored fit. It’s sharp—with a certain sort of 1960s ‘Simon Templar in the merchant navy’ flavour—but it’s not so fitted you can barely move. This is functional clothing, after all.
YKK RULES OK
That chunky zip down the front comes courtesy of the fine folk at YKK. This is a serious bit of hardware made to last, and because it’s a double zip, it zips up as well as down. Good news for cape fans, and even better news for those who like a bit of comfort when they put their feet up.
FROM RAGLAN TO RICHES
Unless your name is Harry Houdini, you probably don’t like to feel restricted in your clothes. That’s why the Heavy Zip Knit has raglan sleeves. A classic sportswear detail, these are sewn from the collar down, to give your arms plenty of reach. No excuse not to change that blown lightbulb now...
STAND AND DELIVER
We’re particularly proud of how that stand collar turned out. Measuring up at 11cm, it can be zipped right up to keep the breeze at bay, meaning your scarf can finally take a day off.
There’s two angled handwarmer pockets to help you keep those digits toasty on frosty mornings. And thanks to that layer of ribbing we’ve added to the openings, you can rest easy knowing your pockets won’t quickly become baggy, misshapen shadows of their former selves.
The Heavy Zip Knit is highly versatile. Whilst it’ll go great under a big coat when winter sets in, because of those pockets and that big zip, it also works really well as a jacket in its own right. In short, this knit is one handy piece of kit.

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.
It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.
Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
