Invest in versatility

The overshirt's one of the most versatile garments around. And if you think we’re heaping too much praise on something which is really just a shirt but heavier, then we beg to differ. Think about what the overshirt does for your wardrobe. It bridges the chasm between shirt and jacket, which is no mean feat. It also spans the gap between formal and casual. You could think of it as the great unifier. Or, you know, just a handy bit of clobber.

Tailored to a T, just like you asked.

A loose fit - no way!

2

A lack of pockets will obviously lead to trouble

Boring old cold colours

A flimsy fabric

You’ll never get over this one

Organic’s what you want, organic’s what you’ll get

100% organic at that. We’ve searched high and low, far and wide for the best materials, and that took us all the way to South Asia and the Arabian Sea, where we found the perfect supplier in India for a soft, breathable cotton, which is also organic.

Only the best of the best

That wonderful cotton happened to be sourced by our trusted partners at the TBM Group, in Italy, a leader in the textile industry for donkey’s years. They’ve spun, woven and dyed our fabric to give it that irresistibly soft feel.

Weight is key

You can’t just claim any old shirt as an overshirt. It needs to have certain qualities. And one of those qualities is its weight. Fortunately, our fabric weighs in at an impressive 420g/m2, making it thick, durable and practical.

A very good vintage

It was important for you guys that the corduroy overshirt had a vintage feel, so we spoke to those we consider the kings of corduroy (those same Italians) and asked if they could make our overshirt dreams come true. They said yes. Turns out 2021 is to corduroy what 1977 was to port. Go on, look it up.

A sure-fire shape

Definitely not baggy and definitely not saggy. We know those are the last things you want in an overshirt, so we’ve made sure it doesn’t hang too low, gets wider at the sides or loose on the arms. It’s a tailored fit that's so spot on you won’t want to take it off.

Safety first

You certainly don’t want to lose anything while gallivanting around with your overshirt on. Pockets are popular with you lot, so we know a thing or two about them by now. We’ve given you three on the outside to keep your stuff safe and sound. They’re big enough to fit valuables in, but not so big that they’re bulky.

Pocket Party

But that’s not all. We've also secured the pockets with button flaps. Plus, the pockets are adorned with horn buttons, which are pretty stylish. And to top it all off, we’ve put an extra pocket on the inside, because we’re nice like that.

If it’s good enough for Pablo Picasso...

Did you know that as well as painting Guernica and becoming a world-renowned painter, Picasso also had time to look dashing in corduroy? He went for a wide wale cord, which we respect. In fact, we’ve done the same. Our slightly thicker cord is soft and seriously comfortable.

Obrigado, Portugal

We said grazie to the Italians and took the cracking corduroy to our pals in Portugal, who put together our overshirt perfectly. They’re actually one of the leading manufacturers of premium shirts, and they’ve been doing it since way back when, so they really do know how to make a shirt or two.

The Team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
