Cut for the Summer
The long and the short of it
Finding shorts that are the right length is no easy task. Too short and you’re in Ray Mears territory, too long and you wind up looking like a moody teen in a BBC sitcom. We prefer somewhere in the middle. Sitting just above the knee, the Classic Shorts hit the spot, whether you opt for a turn-up or not.
Cut to perfection
As for the cut, you asked us to come up with a fit that wasn’t too up-tight, but didn’t leave your legs swamped. Inspired by our tidily cut chinos, we went for a neat shape that’ll work with a button-down shirt, but that’s still got enough give for an impromptu game of headers and volleys. Think: Talented Mr Ripley grabbing a few cold ones for the park, and you’re on the right lines.
Summer shorts, three ways
We couldn’t keep shorts this good to just one material, so they come in 255g/m2 cotton twill made by TBM, 270g/m2 linen woven by Leomaster in Italy and 175g/m2 seersucker provided by France’s Emanuel Lang. That’s three characterfully textured, summer-ready materials in three carefully selected weights, and a bevy of colours. And don’t fret, they all stood up to the rub test because breathable doesn’t have to mean insubstantial.
Dye another day
To make sure those punchy colours last as long as the hardy materials, our twill fabric was dyed in rolls while the linen and seersucker were thread dyed. That means the usually troublesome tag-team of sunshine and washing machine is no match for the Classic Shorts. They’ll keep their punch for summers to come.
Pack your pocket bags
Pocket bags have a tendency to flap about, especially in shorts. So we secured ours firmly in place - so they stay put and keep your odds and ends properly secure. Realising you’ve lost your car keys somewhere along that two-hour beach stroll is never fun.
No stress
Bartacks aren’t exactly the most exciting topic of conversation unless you are really into trousers, but these little rows of stitching are particularly handy when it comes to reinforcing key stress points. They’ve been a fixture of workwear for over a century. We used them on our pocket entries so they stay strong, even when they’re crammed with half of your worldly possessions.
Tried and tested details
It wasn’t just the fit of our tried and tested Chinos that we carried over to the Classic Shorts, we went with their fine-tuned details too. To pair with those sturdy fabrics, we opted for a reassuringly durable, aged-silver YKK zip, and bio-based horn & corozo buttons.
Versatility as standard
Considering how useful these things are, we could have called them the Super Versatile Shorts, but it’s less catchy. They’ll look spot-on with a tee and some tennis shoes, or scrub up well with a button-down. They could probably even elevate a sweat-stained vest and flip-flops combo. Whatever summer throws at you, these beauties will be there to lend a hand.
Here’s the short version…
So, that’s the long and the short of it. A pair of well-cut, comfortable shorts that are actually made with summer in mind. Three timeless summer materials, on-point details and serious staying power. That’s summer sorted, this year and for quite a few to come.
