LUSCIOUS LEATHER, SWANKY SUEDE

You wanted high-quality leather, so we didn’t settle for anything less than the best. Our suede comes from Italy, whilst that black leather is from Spain. Either way, it’s really good stuff—reassuringly tough, whilst still nice and flexible. Bob Dylan wasn’t singing about boots of Spanish leather for nothing.

WATER TIGHT, JUST RIGHT

Suede shoes and wet weather don’t usually go together too well, but ours are different. They’ve been treated with a water-repellent finish that keeps those pesky raindrops from soaking in and puts a stop to the usual day-to-day marking you often get with suede.

THE LIFE AND SOLE

Commando isn’t just a highly enjoyable film starring Arnie and that little guy from The Warriors—it’s also the name of a classic studded sole that we’re big fans of. It’s super grippy, it’s super tough, and it’s super comfortable too. And what’s more, it’s made of 100% natural rubber. Tasty.

THE PERFECT STORM

That sturdy Commando sole is attached to the upper using the suitably dramatic sounding Goodyear Stormwelt. This is pretty much the Landrover Defender of the welt world—built with big puddles and nasty weather in mind. No more wet socks drying on the radiator.

A LOAD OF OLD COBBLERS

No one likes to send a car to the scrapyard when the engine is still running fine—and the same goes for shoes, and just because the sole has worn down, doesn’t mean you should have to wave goodbye to your favourite pair. Those Commando soles are made to last, but if they do eventually wear down, then your local cobbler will have no problem replacing them.

Creative construction

We doubt you’ll be wearing your Chukkas in the gym, but even still, you want to be able to move in them. To make ours more flexible we broke with tradition and placed the leather part which covers the heel under, and not over, the quarters of the shoe. They’re sturdy, but by no means clumpy. Leave the moon boots to the astronauts.

LACE FOR THE PRIZE

One minute you’re breezing about like a young Simon Templar, the next, you’re trying to keep your shoes on with a bit of baler twine. Snapped shoe-strings aren’t great, so we made sure ours are more than tough enough. Waxed tubular laces should do the job nicely.

THE BOOT OF THE PEOPLE

There’s a reason that countless subcultures have appropriated the humble Chukka. They sit right in the middle of smart and casual, meaning they go just as well with a suit as they do with old jeans. Whether you’re breezing through Brighton on a Lambretta, or clicking your fingers in a jazz cafe, the Chukka is the perfect partner.

All seasons

The Chukka is a true year-round boot. Alright, you’re probably not going to wear these whilst shovelling snow off your drive or relaxing by the pool, but extreme conditions aside, they’re functional nature means they’ll rarely be off your feet.

The Team

Asphalte began life back in 2016, just four people with a bit of experience in fashion and a simple enough aim: making good quality clothes in a low-impact way. Things started off smoothly enough, and we were picking up a bit of momentum, but something was missing. The idea for Asphalte didn’t really come together until we got our pals on the blower and asked them, ‘Hey, what do you want us to make?’ We didn’t realise it at the time, but this was the turning point. If Asphalte were a scientific discovery, this would be called the ‘eureka!’ moment. If it were a comic book, this was the part where we get bitten by a radioactive spider.

It might not seem like a revolutionary idea. That’s because it isn’t, really. But fast forward 5 years and asking our friends what they wanted has turned into sending you lot our biannual questionnaires, and using your feedback to determine what we release. And that’s our secret weapon. It’s how we make what you want for a good price, and keep waste to a minimum.

Today our team is a bit bigger than four people. In fact, there are 64 of us now. We used to be based in Paris, but now we’ve moved out to greener pastures down in Bordeaux. Besides that, we’re still working in much the same way as when we first started, with the same ideas about quality, sustainability and our customers leading the way.
