Form and function

Boots are tricky things. You want them to be tough, practical and solid-looking, but no one wants to cross over into Beano hobnail boot territory. After all, even tough guys can have finesse. We spent a lot of time at the drawing board refining a sleek profile and a tidy fit around the ankle. We even popped on a handy tab to help with the whole ‘putting on’ rigmarole. Sturdy, stylish, streamlined and straightforward. Boots that’ll do the job, while looking the business.

Victorious sponge

Durable leather boots aren’t often the most comfortable things to race around in, but ours buck that trend - from the get-go. You told us you wanted more comfort from your next pair of boots and we listened. The Derby Boots have a hidden layer of sponge in the insole that’ll keep things comfy and put a spring in your step from day one.

It was a very Goodyear

The Goodyear storm welt... yep, certainly sounds impressive, and we’re pleased to report that it is. It’s a tried and tested shoe-making method — invented by one Mr Goodyear — that involves attaching the uppers to the sole using a water-resistant leather rim. Not only does it keep the rain out, but it makes things seriously hardy. Skilled craftsmanship at its best.

A stitch in time…

We’re all about refining our products, it’s a job that never ends, and we wouldn’t have it any other way, and that's probably why you're here reading this. For this version of our Derby Boots we've gone opted for double-stitching on the upper inserts and triple-stitching at the front. Not only is it pretty easy on the eyes, it’s also more durable. So, all in all, more Asphalte.

Not all boots have the characterful quarters section on the heel cap, but it's a detail you asked us to keep hold of for the new version. Your boots, your call. And we agree, it adds a nice touch that sits just as well with smart outfits as it does with a pair of raw denim jeans.

Luscious leather

Our Derby Boots aren’t made from any old cowhide. No indeed. We opted for some hard-wearing Spanish and British leather. In fact, we opted for three types of it. For those wondering, the full-grain, pebbled leather comes from the strongest, hardiest part of the hide. Put simply, it’s tough and characterful stuff. For those looking for something a little less rugged, there’s the smooth leather version and — for the first time — the Derby’s now available in a waxed leather finish. More on that, right here…

Waxing lyrical

Looking for a finish that sits somewhere between the ruggedness of pebbled leather and the suave, smart look of our smooth hide? Well, that’ll be the new waxed leather option, tanned by the heritage-soaked chaps at Stead Suede, in Sheepscar, just outside Leeds. They’re the same lot we got to sort our ever-popular Chelsea Boots. This finish’ll patinate nicely over time, growing in character as they go. One word of warning though: avoid white socks and jeans for the first few wears, as the leather can leech a bit of oil at first.

Go commando

Why have double-tough uppers and disposable soles? Serious boots need strong, shock-absorbing soles. That’s why we chose a 100% rubber commando sole from industry stalwarts Itshide. Not only are these super-grippy, and reassuringly sturdy, if you do eventually manage to wear them down, your local cobbler’ll be able to replace them quick-sharp.

Knot a problem

To make sure your laces don’t give up the ghost, we gave them a waxed finish, and opted for low-friction metal eyelets. This means less wear and tear. The result? You won’t be left clutching half a shoelace in despair, having just chinned yourself. Which we think’s a bonus.

Time is of the essence

As the wise sage Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast.” With that in mind, we used ‘speed hooks’ on the top few rungs of our boots’ laces so you can do them up in record time. Less time faffing, more time crashing parades and posing as the Sausage King of Chicago? Yes, please.

Trust the experts

Some say if you want a job done well, do it yourself. We say - get experts to do it. You wanted serious longevity in your Derby Boots, so we had the shoe-smiths at Penha in Portugal make these. It’s no overstatement to say that these señors are true masters of the craft. They’ve been making Goodyear welted footwear since the 60s, and are still at the top of the game. These boots are in it for the long haul.
